(Tampa, FL) – XFC Welterweight Luis “Sapo” Santos agreed to terms for a long term, multi-fight, deal with the XFC in early January and today the promotion announced the Brazilians first opponent. Santos will fight UFC veteran Shamar Bailey in the main event of XFC 23: Louisville Slugfest, which will also mark the promotions first event in the state of Kentucky since 2008.

Santos enters the bout with a veteran’s record of (54-8-1), with 29 of those wins by way of TKO or KO. He is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under the Nogueira brothers and has used that skill set to earn 11 victories by submission. Santos most recently competed in the Bellator Welterweight tournament, making it to the semi-finals of the bracket. He is (7-2-1) through his last ten matches.

Shamar Bailey has competed in Strikeforce, Bellator, and the UFC and currently holds a professional record of (15-7). Bailey comes from a wrestling background. Once a NCAA national qualifier, Bailey turned down an invitation to train with the U.S. Olympic team in Colorado to pursue his career in MMA. He enters the fights riding a two-fight win streak and is currently training beside UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson.

XFC President John Prisco announced the bout to media officials with tons of anticipation of the Welterweight matchup. “This might be one of the biggest fights we’ve put together. We’re talking about two really outstanding fighters, who have fought around the World across many of today’s elite promotions. Santos is one of the most experienced fighters in the sport, and is always a threat to finish his opponents. Bailey has that great wrestling background, which has proven over and over to be one of the most useful skill sets in our sport, but he loves to stand and trade. This is going to be one hell of a fight and great way to re-introduce the XFC to the fans in Kentucky.”

Santos and Bailey will headline XFC 23: Louisville Slugfest on April 19. Also announced for XFC 23 is a highly anticipated debut of XFC Featherweight Deivison Ribeiro vs Zach Underwood in the Co-Main.
