XFC Champion Bruno Azevedo Returns to Training, Now Plans for International Duels
XFC Champion Bruno Azevedo Enjoys Homecoming Celebration, Now Plans for International Duels
Two weeks after winning the title against Allan “Puro Osso” Nascimento at XFCi 9, Nova União athlete Bruno Azevedo picked back up training in Brasilia, targeting his first title defense.
The life of Brasilian Bruno Azevedo suddenly changed on March 14, when he won the inaugural XFC Flyweight World Championship. The conquest over Allan Nascimento made Bruno a sort of ‘celebrity’ in Brasilia, and amid the attention of the public and the local press, the athlete from Nova União resumed training at his home academy, Bruno Macaco Team, Monday the 30th, before returning to Rio de Janeiro in the second half of April.
Appointed as the underdog before the duel with Puro Osso, Azevedo a world champion in jiu-jitsu surprised everyone and was the winner of four of the five rounds against São Paulo native Nascimento, who had the overwhelming support of the public at XFCi 9. Two weeks after the conquest, Bruno has been remained calm with excess of attention in the streets of Brasilia, allowing the momentum to fuel his focus on the return to training for his first title defense.
“I feel like I hit the next level in my career, even still having a lot to learn and achieve. The recognition I’ve had here in Brasilia I’ll never forget, and even not knowing how much further this could take me I am very happy. I am grateful to XFC for the opportunities they have provide me. As the event is broadcast on free television, many people of the city could follow the fight and that helped bring a lot of attention. My focus is to maintain this pace, I’m back home to train at my gym and then over to Nova União. My goal is to continue evolving and growing as a fighter,” said Bruno Azevedo.
Despite joining the Nova União team lead by Dede Pederneiras just three months ago, Bruno already feels at home in Rio de Janeiro. After enjoying some lazy days with family, the Brasilia native could not wait to return to his training routine and credits the personal achievement and much of his skill evolution to the high level of training mates. “This was a much deserved rest period, but I can not wait to return to Rio and training. At Nova União I feel stronger and more confident and I can say that I am not just another athlete. I’m very happy when I come home to Brasilia, but now my training home is the Rio de Janeiro,” exalts Azevedo.
Champion ready’s for international duel in first title defense
The win over Allan Nascimento caught the attention of the millions of fans of the XFC, along with several athletes wishing to challenge. The triumph of Bruno’s achievement in a unanimous decision after five rounds created a disgusted stir from Nascimento’s team and fans, who promptly requested a rematch.
“I am an employee of the XFC, whoever they tell me to fight I will accept the challenge and work hard. But if it depends on my will, I’d rather face a foreign athlete, I think it can be a bigger challenge for me. I respect Allan, he made a real battle, but I won and everyone knew that. I think I can go my way in the organization without facing him again,” he concludes.
